Barn Owl Description

You can easily identify the Barn Owl from other species due to the design of their face. They have a heart shaped face while all other species have a round face. They also have a middle claw that is serrated on their feet. They are very light brown in color and are only about 22 inches tall when they are fully mature. They have a wing span that is about 45 inches. The front of them is white in color.

You will notice that they have one ear that is higher up than the other one. This offers them a type of three dimensional radar system. They do have amazing sight but they definitely depend on their hearing more.

As a beginner beekeeper, there are several ways to get bees. This article looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each way of getting your honey bees.

1. Get a Swarm

This can be a fun way to get bees, and has the main advantage that it is free. You can just put your name down on a swarm list with your local beekeeping association, which will often give preference to beginner beekeepers. Provided you have the help of an experienced beekeeper, a swarm is easily collected and placed in your hive, and you have a ready made colony.

But there are some disadvantages with this method of getting bees. It is very unpredictable – you never know quite when you will get a swarm, and there will often be other people on the list also waiting for a swarm. Because there is no brood, you have no way of judging how good the queen will be, and swarms will often need requeened as soon as possible.

Equally, you have no way of knowing the disease status or temperament of the bees in a swarm, as its origin is unknown. It is also unlikely that you will get honey in your first year, although this does depend on the size of the swarm, and the time of year – the earlier the better.

2. Package Bees

Package bees consist of 2 to 3 lbs of loose bees and a queen in a separate cage, all in a specially designed box that can be sent through the mail. There will also be a can of sugar syrup for feeding during transit. Apart from a swarm, this is the cheapest way to buy bees. Because of the strain of transport, the bees can sometimes be difficult to introduce to the hive (especially if the weather is bad), but generally this is a relatively easy way to start beekeeping.

The drawback is that there is no brood, so no way to assess the queen. No brood also means that it will take longer for the bees to get properly established and build up in numbers. This may mean no honey in the first year, but again will depend on how early you get your bees and the nectar flow in your area.

3. Nucleus colony

A nucleus colony (or ‘nuc’) is just a small temporary hive, usually containing 4 or 5 brood frames. It will contain a working queen, about 10,000 bees and plenty of brood, honey and pollen. You will usually collect your nuc locally, so the bees will definitely be suited to your area – a real advantage.

The queen is a nuc is usually new, and you will be able to see by looking at the brood just how productive the queen is. By transferring this into your beehive, your bees should get off to a great start, and you should have a good chance of honey in your first year.

The main disadvantage is, because you are buying an established colony (albeit a small one) this is a more expensive way to get started than just getting loose bees.

4. Fully established colony

Buying an existing colony is the most expensive option, although remember that you will not need to buy a new hive. The main advantage of this is that you will hit the ground running. The colony will already be fully established, with a full box of brood and stores, so you are much more likely to get honey in the first season.

Apart from the cost, there can potentially be problems with disease, and the queen will probably be older so may be reaching the end of her productive life. Also, as the hive is used it may need replacement parts sooner. If you do decide to go down this route, get an experienced beekeeper to check out the colony for any problems before you buy.

American Alligator Description

The American Alligator has a very thick body and it has amazing strength. Even the tail has more strength behind it than the average adult man. The males are typically about 14 feet long with the females averaging about 10 feet. The largest one in history was just over 19 feet. Like all alligators they have very sharp teeth but this one holds the record for the strongest bite of any animal in the entire world.

There is a rare genetic mutation that can make certain American Alligators albino. They are missing a gene to create melanin. They do exist in the wild but they are extremely rare. Due to the fascination with them though they are commonly bred in captivity as an attraction at alligator farms.

American Alligator Distribution

You will only find the American Alligator in the Southern part of the United States. This includes Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia. The largest number of them are in Florida with a population of around two million.

They do very well in the wetlands here. However, they also have a huge problem as they have to share these areas with humans. Their natural habitat continues to get smaller and smaller all the time. They generally stick to freshwater but can also do very well in the salt water.

They swallow their food whole and use their sharp teeth to break it into chunks. They will consume sand and rocks too. These elements assist with the grinding down of the food that is in their stomach.

American Alligator Reproduction

Mating occurs in the spring as the temperatures start to increase. Roars and bellowing sounds can be heard from the males during this time. They strive to be able to attract the females with those sounds. At the same time, they are offering warnings to other males to stay away.

After mating the pair will go their own directions. The female will get busy creating a nest. It can take her several weeks to do this. She will use what she can find including rocks, sticks, and mud. She can lay from 20 to 50 eggs in this nest and then she will build on top of it. She does so to keep them warm and to prevent predators from finding them.

The young will be born about 65 days later. They will make the journey from egg to the water with their mother. She will care for them until they are about five months of age. A large number of these offspring will be eaten by various predators in the water before they are mature.

American Alligator Conservation

At this time there aren’t conservation efforts in place for the American Alligator. They are doing very well in their natural environment. Grizzly Bear Description

The Grizzly Bear seems to be among the most common that people recognize by its appearance. They are very large bears and they often have a coat that is chocolate brown in color. The cubs are about one pound at birth and very vulnerable. The mothers are excellent at caring for them though. When they are two or three years of age they will venture out on their own.

There are less than 1,000 Grizzly Bears remaining in the wild today. The illegal hunting of them and the destruction of their habitat continues to be a threat. Even with strong conservation efforts in place it is very hard to get their numbers to increase. The Red Kangaroo is the largest of all the species out there and the one that most people are familiar with. They have fur that can range from a shade of gray, to brown, to having a reddish tint. The females can get pregnant again almost immediately if their basic needs are met. In fact, she may have an new joey and continue to care for the older one at the same time. American Black Bear Description

The American Black Bear can be either brown or black in color. Some of them even have white on them. They have thick layers of fur which keep them warm. They have the external layer that we can see. They also have a layer that is very close to the skin. This helps to keep them dry.

They can range significantly in size depending on the region where they live. This can be from 200 to 500 pounds. They can be up to five feet tall in an upright position as well.

Distribution

Behavior

Reproduction

The American Black Bears find each other for mating in the late spring or early summer. However, the females can delay the attachment of the embryo to the uterus until the fall. Then they will be born in February of the following year. Generally two cubs are born but as many as four can be found in a single litter. After about a year of the mothers care these cubs will make a life on their own.

Conservation

When it comes to bears, there are more American Black Bears than any other. Approximately 400,000 of them are believed to be in the wild today. Conserving the natural areas where they live should be more important than it is though.

The Common Chimpanzee is well known for being extremely aggressive. The males are more likely to take part in such behavior than the females.

Observing their natural order, there is a very idealistic and complex hierarchy system. Everyone that is in the troop adheres to that hierarchy. It influences where they sleep, how they eat, and even who mates with who. The males are very dominant over the females of the troop.

The most interesting behavior though is that they are able to use a variety of tools. This includes those for self defense and those for hunting. They can problem solve and they can memorize according to various types of research that have been conducted. It is said to never turn your back on a Common Chimpanzee because they are both aggressive and very manipulative.

Common Chimpanzee Diet and Feeding

There are quite a few different types of foods that the Common Chimpanzee consumes. They love fruit so when it is in season that is what they are the most likely to consume. They also enjoy plenty of leaves and plants that are out there. Seeds are common for them to eat. They are known to eat large amounts of termites and insects. They take part in collaborative hunting efforts too. By doing so they can hunt for meat and share it with the most dominant troop members eating first.

Common Chimpanzee Reproduction

For the Common Chimpanzee mating can occur any time of the year. Generally the males and females are close to 10 years of age when they take part in it. The mating rituals can be very tender due to the social bonding that occurs. The mothers will give birth about 205 days after conception.

They take very good care of the young, and offer them direction and support for about the first five years of life. They can be seen cradling their young just like humans do. When the young get old enough they will ride around on the mother’s back so her arms are free.

Common Chimpanzee Conservation

The Common Chimpanzee is considered to be endangered due to the destruction of its natural habitat. Hunting by humans also cause concerns as they result in lower numbers. Even with plenty of efforts in place though it may not be enough to protect them from extinction.
