In the wild, the Convict Surgeonfish or Convict Tang live in school on the reef of the Indo-Pacific ocean at depth of 0 to 90 m. This is a peaceful fish with a white to silver body highlighted by six vertical black bars.

It is an easy surgeonfish to keep. Actually, it has proven itself to be one of the easiest tang. They can also be kept with other Convict Surgeonfish in aquariums as long as all specimens are introduced to the aquarium at the same time.

It will spend its days glazing on filamentous algae and should be feed with vegetable matter such as zucchini, broccoli, lettuce, sushi nori and any herbivore food that contains marine algae and spirulina.

Adequate space to swim is the key! They should only be kept in tanks of at least 80 gallon. The ideal aquarium should be highly oxygenated with conditions as follows: Temperature between 75 and 82° F with a pH of 8.1 to 8.4, sg 1.020-1.025 and dKH at 8 to 12.

It will do well in a community or reef tank but will probably not do well with other surgeonfish unless the tank is really large because it may get picked on by the other tangs.
