What many dog owners don’t know is the importance of becoming the pack leader. This may also be known as the alpha dog. Your dog will learn that you are the one who will protect, love and feed them. Although you must not raise your voice or be intimidating. This will trigger dominant behavior. This is a serious problem due to the fact that it will cause nipping and biting. It is the most important behavior problem that a dog owner must correct. It is preventable if the pet owner is aware of conditions that cause agressiveness.

A common situation that causes aggressive behavior are puppies that were stored in pet shops or puppy mills. This causes the dog to become fearful due to stressful living conditions and low amount of human contact. Other sources of aggressive behavior are frequent teasing and unwarranted praise. Praise must be handled carefully and can be easily given at the wrong time. Petting the dog is often used by owners in an attempt to calm the dog. The dog is actually confusing petting as praise for the aggressive behavior. Only praise when the dog has done something exactly right. But when it does, too much praise cannot be given.

Some owners are concered their dog will not protect them if an intruder enters if they are not aggressive, but this is incorrect. Your dogs instict will tell them “intruder alert” when you are not there to greet the person barging in the door or window. Your dog must feel it is part of the family pack and should learn to accept anyone you allow to enter your home or personal space. Once your dog sees you as pack leader it will look to you for others acceptance into your home.
