Be particularly cautious when around unfamiliar dogs. As a matter of fact, do not pet them at all if the owner is not there. Even then, you should ask for the owner’s permission before petting. Approach the dog slowly offering an outstretched hand for the dog to sniff. Any animal that is restrained to a yard, rope, or inside a car should not be petted as they may attack on the mistaken notion that you are after their property.
Do not run from dogs as this will cause the dog to want to chase you. The dog will in all probability win that race, so your best bet is to stand still and avoid eye contact until the canine leaves you alone.
A dog that is sleeping should not be bothered since some will bite if surprised. Also, leave your pet alone when it is eating or drinking as some will nip if they believe you are going to take away their food.
Be sure to train your children about how to behave around animals. Common child behaviors like making lots of noise, jumping, and teasing may be perceived as threatening by a canine. Provide supervision at all times if your child is in contact with an animal.
If you witness a dog fight, absolutely do not attemptto separate the dogs by grabbing one. Animals in the heat of a fight may have not idea that they are now attacking you instead of the other canine. Instead, spray water or make loud noises to try to distract the dogs.
Do not tease your dog. You may find it amusing to dangle a treat in front of your dog’s nose and then pull it back when the dog tries to get it. Your dog may not find this activity amusing and reward you with a bite.
Be sure to expose your puppy to a variety of situations and people of varying ages. This socialization will help the puppy as an adult to be more confident and less likely to bite out of fear.
