MLB Dog Jerseys: The Evolution of Canine Fashion
Dogs have been paling around with humans for a pretty long time now. Over 12,000 years, in fact. Early humans domesticated dogs before they had ever even seen a cow. As is often the case with humans, the concept of ownership evolved shortly afterwards, and with that, the dog collar. Throughout history, dogs have worn collars belonging to those who own them. By the Renaissance age, dog collars came complete with locks, the owner holding the key as proof of ownership. Even prior to that, the value of dogs was quite clear, such as in Persian societies in which there were laws against mistreating and killing dogs.
For years, dogs were usually owned by the wealthy as a demonstration of their wealth, or by farmers who needed working dogs. There were also guard dogs kept at various establishments. As far as occupations went, working dogs were a necessary part of their owner’s livelihood. You would have been hard pressed to find a shepherd who didn’t own several white dogs for guarding the flock. Sheepdogs were usually white so that they were more visible at night. On the other hand, if you wanted a dog to guard the animals in your barn, black was a better color as it was a much better for sneaking up on intruders unseen. Hunting dogs were also quite common, and used to hunt a wide variety of different animals. It was a pretty different life from that of your modern couch hog of a dog who has a selection of MLB dog jerseys and a Nascar dog collar.
Even if your dog has a large selection of fancy collars, including NFL dog collars for football season, and a collar for every holiday, it still has something in common with every other dog who has worn a collar- ownership. In fact, displaying your dog’s rabies tags is actually part of the legal requirements for owning a dog in many places. Most people also choose to put an identifying tag on as well. That way, in the event that your pooch wanders off, anyone who finds them can take a look at the collar and call you right up to let you know they’ve found your wayward dog.
Even if you’re got the fluffiest, tiniest dog in the world (without actually just having a hamster on a leash), chances are, there is something in your dog’s bloodline that was historically valued. If you have a breed that was specifically bred for looks, you probably have a very illness-prone pet who has a delicate constitution to say the least. If, however, you have a working dog who was bred based on the quality of work, then your dog is likely very healthy and not prone to the majority of ailments that can affect dogs. Either way, owning a dog is something that brings a little work and a lot of fun and joy into your life, not to mention the fun you can have with canine fashion! Let that collar make a statement!
